Towing mirrors are a legal requirement for cars that are towing trailers and caravans. If your caravan or trailer is wider than your car, you must fit additional towing mirrors. To comply with the law, you must be able to see 20 metres behind you and four metres either side of the towed vehicle. The law also specifies a maximum distance that the towing mirrors must not extend beyond. Cars manufactured after 28th January 2007 must not use towing mirrors that extend more than a maximum distance of 25cm from the sides of your caravan or trailer. For cars manufactured before this date, it is a maximum distance of 20cm. You can be fined up to £1,000 and get 3 penalty points for towing without proper towing mirrors. It is also important to remember to remove your towing mirrors when you have detached your caravan or trailer as it is an offence to drive with them still attached.
